Mario is the face of Nintendo and pokemon is very popular so of course there gonna be more characters from those series. The reason FF has no characters is due to square not having control over some of the characters from that game.

Mai was considered but they, Sakurai and the rest I believe, didn't want to censor her. They also didn't want to lose their E rating so.....yeah.
