Her name is Aeris, because it's based on "Aries".

Anyway, "Aertih" is just an alternative spelling.

The "TH" is pronounced as an "S", just like "Sephiroth" is pronounced "Sephiros".

It was/IS Aerith when translating the game from Japanese it was a grammatical error. Which they did fix in Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children her name is Aerith Gainsborough.
As a side note Aeris (also spelled Eris) in Greek mythology was the Goddess of strife (Haha that's actually a funny joke on the game translators behalf) meaning angry or bitterness, obviously nothing Aerith never was/is.

The "th" is not pronounced like you retarded Americans pronounce it. The Japanese pronounce it like the "s", therefore both Aeris and Aerith are correct spellings. They are just different spelling interpretations of the same sound.

...anon4, you got the mistake backwards. the Japanese character "su" is the closest way Japanese has to creating the "th" sound. Her name was intended as an English word to begin with, and the official spelling existed before the faulty translation happened because the source information wasn't shared with Squaresoft USA during the initial translation process. When the translation team began changing it to English, all they saw was 'su', not knowing there was already a W.O.G. English spelling to her name. That how a lot of the inaccuracies happened. translation between Nihongo and English is an inaccurate ART, not a science.
