Broly was never intended to be anything else as the screaming Brute and originally nobody asked for anything else than that. For his first Time in the 90's he was the Wet Dream of Fanboys of the buffed and muscled Super Saiyan Forms of the Cell Saga that debuted during the same Time in the Canon.
For the Reboot i blame Fems and Millennials, though i am Part of 'em.
Then again, was never a big Fan of him nonetheless. He was one of the Final Nails in the Coffin of anything what classic DB was.

That's not actually what the original Broly's backstory was, it's just the dub version's inaccurate dialog coupled with years worth of stupid internet memes perpetuated by idiots and people who don't know any better.
The original Broly doesn't even remember who Kakarot is, it's just his fighting spirit that triggers Broly's hyperactive Saiyan fighting instincts. Paragus straight up says so in the original untranslated dialog. The callback to Goku crying in the pod next to Broly as a baby was just a narrative parallel to illustrate that the same thing is happening again in the present without either Broly or Goku being aware of it. It's meant to be dramatic irony.
Not like it matters though, a pithy meme and a fandom full full of meatheads makes it impossible to change the common perception now. It's too late, the falsehood has become the accepted "truth" now in the court of public opinion.

Mentioning falsehood being the accepted truth.. The whole new and now canon Broly Story also changed the original Story of Gokus Arrival on Earth, slightly but immensly to the overal Tone of his Time on Earth, with being several Years old and basic conscience of evenything around him, rather as an newly born Infant.
Now its hard to believe he still ended up with head injury and perpetually memory loss of his Origin.
I guess now its his true and good spirited Nature, and that he never really was a cold blooded Saiyan at all, whilst being guided and raised by good old Grandpa Gohan, that adds up to it.
But.. nobody watched Dragon Ball anyway, amiright? *in TFS Mania*
