Explanations are various: They're from a poor family that couldn't afford good orthodontics; their shovel-shaped incisors (characteristic of Asians) make any natural orthodontic problems even more glaring from a Western perspective; the root of the problem may be the fact they're so petite to begin with, small craniums mean less space for largish "buck teeth" in their tiny jaws; it also happens that such uneven teeth are actually considered kawaii and endearing within certain elements of Japanese society.
