fun historical fact. It used to be required by schools for anyone who didn't bring their gym kit (A specifically school required gym set of clothing etc, uniform shoes sportswear towel etc) That they had to play gym in their underwear. It was actually outlawed after a while as it was considered a form of psychological torture. I know it was fairly common in male gym classes in the UK I think for a while. I remember one of my grandparents talking about it before they died (Not on their deathbed obviously just one of the things they said about school in their day)
