This is what Ash/Satoshi should've started doing when Ho-Oh appeared in the skies on the very first Pokemon episode ever. He just sat there with Pikachu buzzed out and watched it fly away......We knew nothing about Johto then, but it was right there in front of us without our knowing. Pretty slick of them. They KNEW the Kanto saga would be successful so they went ahead and started working on Johto anyway, maybe even Hoenn as well.
