Yeah... funny thing about that.
The "Vodka-swilling commies" got the idea from the Grumman X-29. Only one thing kept the Berkut out of production, and that was cost (forward swept wings offer much more control over delta wings, but the Berkut was simply too expensive to produce en masse.)

Overall, though, swept-forward presents more problems with the structure. Aerodymanic stress is more acute, so a big chunk of that high price tag is the engineering and materials that goes into making sure the wings don't snap off. The Hansajet only made into production because it did not have to be very agile.
And for the record, Russia dealt with FSW long before the US did, and of course Germany beat both of them to the punch. Post WWII Russia test flew the only example of the Junkers EF 131, as well as it's development, the Baade (OKB-1) 140, predating the X-29 by about....30-40 years?. So in reality the X-29 only re-ignited the interest.
