Look (for all we know), the guy IS doing this himself; he IS the tentacles..!

but he must shut down his body and go into rest mode / sleep mode, or whatever mode that he has to be in, to be able to use the tentacles..

He's fully conscious of what's happening and is feeling everything thru the tentacles.

More like the tentacles are coming out from underneath his robes, and what looks like boredom is actually concentrated bliss.
