Dai, you're wrong. The RX-78-2 was no true 'Prototype.' Also there were a total of 8 RX-78 Gundams made. The only true Prototype Gundam was the RX-78-1 'Prototype' Gundam. (It even has prototype in the name).
The RX-78-2 was Amuro's Gundam while the RX-78-3 was the testbed for the Magnetic Coating that Unit 2 (Amuro's Gundam) would later receive. That being said, Unit 3 could also be considered a 'true' Prototype as well.
Next you have Units 4 and 5 which were Testbed units for other weapons and were assigned to another Pegasus-Class Mobile Suit Assault Carrier known as the "Thoroughbred." (The White Base was also a Pegasus-Class)
Unit 6 was known as the Mudrock Gundam and was, until Unit 7, the most advanced and most powerful of the Gundams. Though it suffered from a highly inexperienced Pilot that couldn't tell up from down and it ended up being destroyed.
What I'm trying to say is that after Unit 1 none of the Gundams were really Prototypes. The RX-78-2 wasn't completed due to the attack on Side 7. There simply wasn't time to fully develop the suit as much as Federation Engineers wanted (Due to the fact that Amuro had to take it out into actual Combat...and a lot of the V-Project Personnel were likely killed in the attack.
The creation of the Second Lot of RX-78 Gundams proves this (The second lot being Units 4, 5, 6 and 7).
