It's magic. Lols.
Not only does it let them fly(which takes a lot of their power, right there), but it also allows them to boost the capabilities of their weapons, and in at least some cases even to fuel some special skill(s).
Anyway, at short range, you could do plenty of damage to a WWII-period aircraft with small arms fire, 9mm or even less. Hell, even modern aircraft can major damage from such minor weapons, given the right circumstances.

Well, if you take it to that extent I have to state Erica Hartmann, who is based on Erich "The Black Devil" Hartmann, highest-scoring figher ace (all times), comes from [Karl]sland, which is a fictional succesor of the Holy Roman Empire, which was founded by Charlemagne the Great, who happens to be called "[Karl] der Große" in German.
With that in mind I'd say both of the two above are right...
If you excuse me, I have to brace myself for the incoming downvotes ;)

@Anon295061 - It ain't the caliber...it's the construction of what the round is hitting.
Light construction in Japanese aircraft early in WW2 meant that .303 bullets could rip through them easily. On the flip side, American fighters, with more robust construction, weren't as vulnerable to to such light ammo.
