Very likely based on real life g suits that fighter pilots wear.
It keeps blood from pulling into your legs when you execute high g's in combat craft. When you're moving around at those high speeds, thousands of feet in the air, the last thing you want is having blood that SHOULD be going into your brain not getting there. With lack of blood in your head, you very likely can black out, which is very likely a one-way ticket to a crash landing of the worst kind.
