Let's just say that, more likely than not, the brolly has a few secrets that only Kogasa knows.

For instance, here we she that she's in need of comfort and protection. So the brolly becomes a big, lovable, huggable giant guy she can count on for both.

And no, Kogasa isn't a guy. The brolly's her spirit companion.
