It may be meant to be a personification of lilith as a qliphoth; she represents the full moon and is heavily connected to night as a primordial all mother, man and demon alike. That could potentially explain the connection with death as well, however there's often connections with adam and/or eve so I'm a bit conflicted on tagging it like that.
