far from home, my kitten must have wandered.
maybe far in the field, he might be harbored.

I search and search, from morning til night,
I pray and pray, that come home he might.

I search and search, both night and day
but only at the side of the road does he lay.

That can’t be him, I cried and cried.
I compared the body with a picture of my boy, side by side.

That’s not Carmelo. He has a white stripe on his nose.
That’s not Carmelo. He has only three white toes.

That must be Carmelo. He has a white patch on his nose.
That must be Carmelo. He has several white toes.

That’s not Carmelo. I will continue my search.
But this imposter’s body is now buried in my backyard, under the birch.

I pray and pray that Carmelo will come home.
Yet under my soil, lies his clone.

I don’t believe it’s him, I know he’s alive.
I know my kitten. I know he’ll survive.

A week he’s been gone, but soon he’ll come home.
Yet under my soul, forever lies his clone.
