Anon 4. Of course it had nothing to do with Gunbuster, you forget, it takes place almost 12 THOUSAND years after Gunbuster. I always thought that time skip was WAY overkill, but hey, both anime were amazingly done, so I'm not complaining.

5/3 years late comment here. Diebuster, while it does take place 12k years after Gunbuster, doesn't really have "nothing to do with it" considering the development of buster machines, the ending and the space monster power source. It's not super focused around Gunb but there's definitely more than just passing references if you pay attention
