Ciel was a sociopath who didn't deserve an ending as good as the one he got. From a literary standpoint he had next to no depth.
Alois and Claude were actually very engaging characters who were completely wasted in a series of forced plot twists that would have made Shayamalan facepalm.

I love Ciel, but seriously. Alois' character is so much more engaging, as has been said.
It's actually a shame he didn't get more airtime.
But this is still a sexy picture, and I dont think the artist necessarily disliked Alois. But did this for the lulz. The sexy lulz. Though I could be mistaken.

Totally agreed. I wish the second season were focused on Alois (and Claude) exclusively. The way that the plot deals with their destinies is a shame.
