I feel as if the artist is trying to convey a powerful meaning. This truly is a work of art.

He's trying to make 1850's art look ecchi, fucking epic. Auguste was old and was 75 years old when he made this piece, he probably wished he had a young high school girl with a one-piece on as well.

You do realize he's right though, don't you? The joke is that it's applying modern fetishism to classical art in place of contemporary fetishism. It may not have been intended to be deeply meaningful, but it says something when fetishism of old went on to be considered fine art, especially in modern times when we've abandoned actual talent and skill in art in favor of spotlighting subject matter. If you apply modern art interpretation to classical art, then the craftsmanship doesn't matter any more and it's not the human likeness that makes it impressive or noteworthy, but the subject the art addresses. In this case, that subject was sexual desire and fetishism. Translate that into a modern Japanese context and this change has effectively updated the art without damaging the original concept, but of course it looks absurd. That's the joke.

Alas, the joke falls flat in the West.
