Strike Witches 1991

darthtabby-san's request and suggestion. I'd had the idea of making something with Lucchini's granddaughter, but I didn't have any specifics laid out, so his suggestion was helpful. ◆The F-104S. The Italian export version of the F-104, it seems it saw a number of improvements that kept it in service until 2004. Maybe its fast-looking appearance struck a chord with the Italians. Maybe that has nothing to do with it. ◆Lieutenant Gabriella "Missile" Lucchini (age 17), member of the 10th Fighter Wing of the Pricipality of Romagna Air Force. Francesca Lucchini's speed-obsessed granddaughter. She configures her Strikers into outrageous settings in her quest for speed, which has caused a number of crashes. As a result she earned the nickname "Missile", which has nothing to do with her laid-back, optimistic personality.

Not an MG42, but a related weapon developed from it---either an MG3 or CETME Ameli model.

The MG3 is basically just a modernized MG42 chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO instead of the older 7.92x57mm "8mm Mauser" cartridge. Rate of fire compared to the MG42 is reduced...usually, at least.

At least one variant of the CETME Ameli, Italian rather than German, is chambered instead for 5.56x45mm NATO, making it a potentially much lighter machine gun than the related weapons which came before. Rate of fire compared to the MG42 is still close---that is to say, it's another buzzsaw. Problem with these: the prototypes were great, but the production models (early ones, at least) were complete and total shit, thanks to cost-cutting and quality control issues which lead to a more cheaply made product.
