All their hope in what's good in the world, or whatever is left of it at this point, finally shatters completely and their minds deteriorate into but a phantom of their former selves, driven into a madness so deep and inescapable they become nothing more than witch-hunting tools to keep the world from being overrun. Not because it has any sort of sympathy for the world at large. No. Only because if it were to be overrun, there would be no more people. No more poor fools for him to draw into his trap. No naive cuties to break when their perceptions of reality are broken and they are left with nothing more than the realization that all that awaits them is an inhumane death at the hands of some random abomination.
