I get most of them, but not all. Homura's are a given right off the bat, and I can kinda see Madoka's choices...but Kyouko and Buneary? Mami and Aipom? Sayaka and Kingrda?

Not sure I get what sort of qualities they'd share. Any thoughts?

I think the three you mentioned line up fairly well in perceived personality.

Buneary is to soften up Kyouko a bit, and has that bit of a playful side; Aipom serves a similar role for the outgoing Mami, but is also a display of her exuberance and energy in some ways; and Kingdra is obviously representative of Sayaka's wrath unleashed.

My personal take on it, in any case.
