^^Actually, the official, Japanese Nintendo guide says, that N is your rival, despite everything. It also states that Cheren and Bianca are simply your childhood friends. It's weird but yeah.

Cheren and Bianca are also rivals and they get Starters and can be battled after the game. N does not get a starter and therefore shouldn't count in this picture as he is the villain and leaves after the game and is never seen or battled again after the game! Though Wally doesn't get a starter either but he sticks around after the game to be battled again.

Cheren and Bianca are the traditional rivals that we got used to. N officially IS a rival tho'. The proof to that is the text below taken from the guide book.

"主人公のライバルで行く先々に登場する謎の青年。"

主人公のライバル = Main character's rival

ライバル = Raibaru

Barry/Jun/Pearl is also a childhood friend and rival and he gets a starter. I'm just upset Cheren and Bianca don't get respect as rivals when they clearly are and get starters while N doesn't get a Pokedex or a starter and he's treated like a rival even though he's the main villain with Ghetsis.

Official as a rival or not, N doesn't even get starter. He already ruin many picture with his inappropriate appearance. DAMMIT, they even let Cheren and Bianca out. WHY not at least Cheren is in the PIC.
