I'd say otherwise. Yes, the original travel does, but the relationships between Kaine and Emil pace themselves and the added conversations add a bit of depth that Father Nier lacks during the second half of the story.

Still, it's nice to have a real hero for a protagonist.

No Anon6, his relationships with Kaine and Emil simply do not have the depth father Nier does. Just because papa Nier didn't have the pollyanna attitude of the sibling Nier does not suddenly mean he didn't have depth. How he acted with Kaine and Emil, father Nier, was much more natural and less cliche than brother Nier.

And it's nice to have a protagonist who isn't a JRPG brat.
