that or it's passed down by plain bad luck

ezio (top right) received the scar during a brawl when a rock was thrown and hit his lip, surprizingly, later in the game, he received a cut to the exact same spot on his lip, but since the mark was already there, it's just assumed that it's because of luck

the mark is more of an unlucky birthright

it's unknown to me how altair and desmond got their scars

Desmond was beaten, and given in to the templars Maybe. Altair was possibly given his due to the beginning, how he kind of betrayed the creed.
