Paul/Shinji isn't a bad character. He just trains his Pokemon the Spartan way, does what we gamers do: Catch a bunch of Pokemon and choose the strongest (best IV, best nature) and let the others go.
He also plays battles competitively, like what most gamers did, especially in battle frontier/subway.
You don't like him because he doesn't trust and love his Pokes? I think it's the backwards. He trusts his Pokes to carry out his strategy and his Pokes trust him to make them stronger and win in battles, as evidence by his other Pokes, left with his brother, watching his match against Ash.
Ash only wins because the writers and director wants to promote Love & Trust>>>>Strategy.

Paul/Shinji isn't a bad character. He just trains his Pokemon the Spartan way, does what we gamers do: Catch a bunch of Pokemon and choose the strongest (best IV, best nature) and let the others go.
He also plays battles competitively, like what most gamers did, especially in battle frontier/subway.

Well, speak for yourself. There are alot of people (inlcuding myself) who train whatever they caught—with good results.

You wouldn't have to do that if you study pokemons before catching, don't waste poke balls in those who have bad stats or too much type disadvantage or bad learnset.
I catch very little pokemon and strength 10 to 12 of them so I don't need to worry about weakness or type disadvantage during battles :V the rest become my contest or HM/TM pokemon so no one is locked in a computer...
