Some primates use it socially. Humans use it socially and because it feels good.

Other animals have to use it reproductively because it is otherwise painful. Cats for example.

Actually Lions typically last about 5 seconds and then they usually rest for some minutes before going at it again.
They can mate about 40 times a day though. It's a survival practice more than anything due to the general shortness of their times of heat and the survivability of females being so low. They mate that many times in 4 days to make DAMN sure they have some kids.
