I'm pretty sure most of the older fans hated the anime from the beginning. It's the only reason why Pokemon had such a terrible reputation for so long.

I beg to differ. The show was great until they decided to extend it past 80 episodes and a movie, and thus changing much of their plans of concluding the series (Satoshi, anime Red, winning the Pokemon League).
