I know nothing about shogi, so whats with the single red piece on the board?

@Anon: What they're actually playing is Tai Shogi, the second largest shogi variant (on a 25x25 board with 177 pieces of 99 different types). The red pieces (there's actually 7) indicate a promoted piece, which is essentially like a pawn turning into a queen in Western Chess, just far more varied; in Tai Shogi, pieces promote by capturing another piece, hence why there's a few closer to Momiji's side than Nitori's.
