I would guess they're are all pawns, getting their strings controlled by Van.

Those dolls on the ground represent the various Ion clones that failed to meet Van's expectations.

Up there is the doll that represents Sync, who was empty, just a fighting doll.

With Anise is the Ion replica that had the original's powers but not his strength, which Anise felt a obligation to protect.

In Arietta's arms is the doll that represents the original Ion, which she loved deeply.

Now for the middle one, I think he could also be Sync, or at least what he should have been IMO. Tired of fighting just out of pure hatred for it's own existence he decides to become the Fon Master Sync. Now he fights to help Van build the "era of the replicas", waiting for the right moment to kill Van and become the new ruler of the world.

Anise is poisoned by a deep hatred towards the score, which foresaw her Ion's death but gave no means to prevent such a sad fate. Now she wants to destroy the score and all those who worship it. Rejected by her family and friends she becomes Van's protegee. But she hates him for using her Ion and builds a secret alliance with Sync to annihilate Van.

Arietta, having lost both her mother and her Ion sees in Sync the closest she can get to her beloved one. She pretty much lost her mind and has a spectrum of loneliness and despair where her soul once was. She pretends not to care about Anise but still remember how much she hates her and plans to kill Anise so she can have Sync all to herself.

Tales of the Abyss - The story of Fon Ruler Sync

Soon in a theater near you, or maybe in a game store, or even in a book store. :p

Two things: 1, the Ion on Anise's shoulder is Florian....

2: now this is what I feel should have happened, I don't know why but I feel Fon Master Ion should have been the main antagonist of the game. Hatred towards Mohs and Van for making him just to use him as a replacement for the original Ion, he pretends to be kind to everyone to fool them, and once Van, his biggest threat, was killed by Luke and everyone at the halfway point, he begins to plans on total world control by killing Mohs and Tritaim and begins controlling the rest of the order, and the God Generals... now THAT would have been a great plot twist.

I think the one sitting on throne might be the original Ion. The original Ion is twisted and bitter towards life (and I'm not lying) while the replica Ion is sweet and kind.
