I was never scared of this guy, even as a kid (dead hand more startled me, but didn't actually -scare- me, either), and it's probably because of the noise he makes.
I mean, he makes this kinda rhythmic humming noise, my brother and I were both forever amused by it.
That aside, maybe it's the better rendering on the 3DS, or really taking a good, hard look at it, but I think it's a touch more unsettling to me as the adult I am now. Maybe it's the amputated hands, I don't really know.
Thinking about it, I don't think I was ever actually scared of anything in a Zelda game, but ReDeads always made me a bit nervous, since I really hated having them on me. Those things were not only startling, but a nuisance, especially under the well.
