Emo = You advertise to people that you have black, gothic feelings. You *need* regular human interaction, because you *need* people to know what a tortured, enigmatic soul you are, and that they'll never ever understand you.

Anti-social = You do everything in your power to keep human interaction to an absolute minimum, if at all. You do this because you have a genuine, paralyzing fear of people, of losing friendship, or your brain just isn't "wired" the way that society demands.

Squall is Anti-social. He doesn't go thru the game searching people out to vocalize his unique dark snowflake-ness to, he's a sharptongued loner who uses sarcasm to push people away, at least at the start.

It's called Character Development. Lots of good stories use it.
