Until we get the cloning of humans down good, I don't think cat-girls are going to show up anytime soon. Plus I don't think American scientists are going to have much interest, since they'd rather study space and attempt to clone dinosaurs and plantlife. Plus...last I checked it was illegal (at least as far as altering DNA went) to do dangerous experiments on humans.
I kind of wish they would make such beings though, and the world where animal/humans existed at some point.
