Uh... who here wouldn't mind this if they were a fictional character and he'd (or she'd) let them down in time?

Harsh! Executed for being fashionably ahead of her time B-)

Anon1, I'm with you on that line of thought. Except that I wouldn't be a fictional character. SHE would be as real as us. ..and appreciate being rescued, of course.

For the record, the idea here is that he shoots the air, the horse panics and gallops from under her and she ends up hanging, not that he might shoot her directly. Just in case someone missed that.

I thought the idea was he shoots the horse, horse falls, she dies.

you dont shoot the horse, that's wastefull. you smack it on the ass, or shoot your rifle into the air scaring it, the horse runs off, and the convict does the hangmans jig. simple as that

Yeah, shoot your horse? That would be stupid. Why would you shit away $10 like that.

It's curious though it looks like they got a gallows set up. I've only seen this method used when all you've got is a horse and a tree, lynch mob style and all that.

No, in the movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Tuco was subjected to this sort of thing and Blondie (Clint Eastwood) had to save him time and time again (and it was gallows, not a tree).
