Generally the rule is you ALWAYS use the original Japanese name for a character, no matter what series it is. There's an exception for the Pokemon themselves because there are so goddamn many of them that memorizing all of those names would be silly.

There are a lot more anime characters out there than there are Pokemon. It's silly to use the Japanese for humans and the English names for then. Especially since nobody knows the gym leaders by their Japanese names since a lot more people play the games that use their English names than watch the Japanese version of the anime.

I agree that's weird. Most people won't know the original, I have to Google for it before I go to Gelbooru.
