Technically, Red is dead according to one of the theories, due to the fact that, A.) He never speaks, and B.) You pokemon always sense a strange presence while on Mt Silver. It kinda makes sense when his mom says he hasn't talked to her in a long time, and why Misty/Kasumi is looking for a boyfriend during Silver/Gold vers.

He never speaks because he's a silent protagonist, the strange presence is supposed to make you want to look further in the cave, his mom hasn't talked to him in a long time because he left to become champion, and Misty is looking for a boyfriend because Red has become a hermit and she doesn't have to want to date him in the first place.
