The point 977 was trying to make is that if you're going to put one of Yeager's personalized details on the plane (as in "Glamorous Glennis", the name of his X-1) you might as well use a plane he actually flew, like the X-1 or P-51, or at least something by the same manufacturer like a Bell P-39.

My guess is the artist just wanted to draw a two-seater since both of them could ride in it.
