Wrong @ Anon1 and 2. This image seems to be displaying the former female characters of each game before Generation Five. A female Protagonist (Blue/Green) was originally planned to be available in the first games. However, she was cut from it likely due to time constraints. In the Manga, the character Blue was based off this canceled character. The one on the right is Blue/Green. The one on the left is Leaf, another character based off the originally planned female protagonist.

it's true. look on the back of an old red/blue game manual or strategy guide and odds are you will see an old artwork of a 3-way battle between Ash (Red), Gary (Blue), and this mystery girl in a black dress (Green?). Since there was a green version in Japan, it's likely she was cut but who knows why.
