My thought is to give the impression that Greys like Nana and BRS aren't considered people by anyone other than the scientist who created them.
BRS faced the boss version of this thing with mechanical reasoning, letting two of the last ten people on earth die before doing anything. This was probably due to some form of conditioning.
However, the more she spent with them, or with the one soldier in particular, the more she began to see herself as a human and took actions based on what she felt was right rather than 'what she was made to do'.
Also, the outfit is confirmed to have originally belonged to Nana, so we can assume these were more viewed as 'parts' than clothes by the military. And then there was the leader of the invaders who considered them food. This is kinda cemented by the fact that place where BRS had a scar in her original design now has a barcode instead.
Admittedly, I would've liked costume options belonging to other versions of BRS as unlockables at least, but I think that's the basic gist of it.
