Both anon.3&4 are right jin fell into the cauldron and was thrown 90yrs into the past it was their that he lost most his memories, then calvis (and maybe rachel i forget) salvaged jin from the edge but not all of him so they attached susano'o to him and thats where hakumen begins
So it's mostly spirit but some of him is in there just not enough for his body to be called alive
