I don't understand what there is to not understand. It's like how many people thought/still think Sailor Moon is meant for girls or like how Anime is meant for children and look at Otaku and Anime fans as weird. Same thing.
One's age or gender should not determine what one is allowed to watch or enjoy. Those people who think otherwise are just close minded.

@Actar
A lot of people (not all) actually seem to have been relatively open-minded in accepting that everyone is entitled to their own tastes and such when it came to MLP. It's somewhat comparable to Powerpuff Girls when it comes to a "girly-looking show" appealing to a broader audience.
It's my understanding that the actions of the fandom itself is what is largely responsible for the bronies' notoriety, which has become somewhat infamous for being overbearing and defensive, though the overzealousness has died down considerably since.
I'm not denying that there are people that bash the fans based on the stigma, nor am I looking to start an argument. Just thought I'd share my two cents based on what I personally observed, which you're free to disagree with.

I'm not a Brony; I don't watch the show, nor do I get involved with the fanbase.
But this. Damn.
