I agree but let's not write off Toji and Kensuke, they were pretty good buds with Shinji. I guess he needed something more, though.

He needed a rock, an anchor, someone who he could turn to and know that through all the hell his monster of a father or the scum he was 'teamed' with put him through, that in the end, everything would be alright, that he had someone who believed in him, supported him, maybe....even loved him
