Anon 1 is right, the more ancient a vampire is, the more powerful it is at night, the only downfall, it's more vulnerable to sunlight then newer vampires.
That's just ONE vampire mythos though, there are dozens of them.

The original mythos of vampires have them as demons possessing the bodies of the dead only able to come back at night and repelled by any holy relics. Sunlight would purify them and render them a pile of ash. I've studied this stuff for the past 20 years.
