Logically it should be an exoskeleton but in the story you clearly see it works like regular flesh and bone, with veins bulging. I think of them as knee pads.

She was designated by name and actions as a boy, but given the body of a female. So she's more of a tomboy. The anime reinforced this. Sorry to burst your bubble.
