He gets strong and gets there fast. Yes.
But his main strength is that of a father. He's one of the instances where his male-only class skills can be passed on to a female child, and one of his classes turns into a pegasus knight class for any female child unit. Very useful for any child unit who wouldn't be able to get there otherwise.

@anon11: Yeah, that is true, but unfortunately, none of the other children honestly benefit that much from him, and out of the 3 that do get the pegasus knight from him, Kjelle arguably is the best to use him on. And Gaius is perfectly capable of doing the same in that regard. But because of his lack of useful skills, while he DOES get strong fast, when the rest of the party catches up with him, they'll ultimately be better. But I've honestly come to find that Donnel just isn't the god of Fire Emblem and paragon that every other unit should be measured by that his fanboys think he is.
