pwned is a typo ow owned that got to be extremely popular. The owner of a server wanted it to say some thing along the lines of "(insert name) got owned by (insert name" when a particular type of kill/weapon was used/accomplished. He typoed pwned and it caught on before he ever got to fixing it, then he put it back after wards and it spread from there.
I do believe it was a WoW server that this was on.
