For fuck's sake...even before he had armamend haki...if his body wasn't hard then he couldn't punch the way he's always punched.
His ability makes his body rubber so he can stretch, but somehow its also as "hard" as a normal human body body.

And before you question the logic behind this, remember that its the same story where a guy can lit his leg on fire by friction, and it doesn't burn (and neither does his shoes) because "his heart burns brighter than fire".

actually annon7 his body is the same as a normal body, but when stretched or bent past human limitation, then it becomes rubber,

fyi try punching your hand forward as hard as you can, like your trying to grab something, if it hurts, luffy would probably stretch in that situation
