Which is one of the tragic things about the original series: Shinji, in his depression and self-loathing constantly thinks that the people around him either only care about him because he is useful, or they are only faking it and secretly dislike him or their feelings are so superficial that they might end up hating him at any moment.
And the truth is...most of them simply genuinely like him for who and how he is.

Nothing tragic about shinji. He is a selfish brat, prima donna and a misogynistic bastard. Everyone ends up hating him because they see what a real brick he really is. He turn his back on his friends, treat his female pilots like crap and refuse to admit that he is gay. This dude is a LOSER!
