Beat's me, but the Japanese seem to be set as Greninja as Serena's One True Starter Pokemon. The only times I've seen her with Fennekin and it's line is in pics mainly related in the anime, and I've seen close to zero pics with her and the Chespin line.
Actually, come to think of it I've seen more pics of Calem with the Fennekin line than the Froakie and Chespin line.

In my experiences i'v seen both Calem and Serena with Greninja as their starter through fan art or simply showing off their teams. I guess it's just because Froakie seems to be the popular choice this gen for Greninja alone. (obviously not saying it's better in everything else) I'd also like to say that maybe people are mostly pairing up Greninja with the female because most people are playing as her, even guys, than their actual gender. Maybe because the male looks too generic and doesn't have as many clothing customization? Just a guess though, I play as the male anyway.
