You don't put the nail through the palm, you put it thorough the wrist joint. If you pull the supports from under them, their body weight will tear the nail out. It's been proven in experiments that the palm cannot support the weight of a human body, that's why the Romans hammered the nails thorough the wrist joint. Plus it hurts more that way.

In a real crucifixion they nail you through the wrist not the hand and the nails tend to be closer to a railway spike than a modern house nail.
