I chose a Froakie (I'm more of a fire type trainer, but like it happened in the Unova and Hoenn games my favorite of the starter trio by typing, stat distribution, movepool and design is the Water type one) and I started with Calem (I was about to choose Serena, since I love her design, but I'm quite fond of the Calem x Shauna shipping).

So...You're not alone on that.
