From this artist I'm surprised it's not the girl who's the robot. (It's unlikely that she is; his look way more machinelike.)

Yeah, her being an external unit is unlikely. Due to the set up, it appears that the big guy lost his head (but his brain was never there to begin with), and he needed to make some replacements for the lost eye parts. Ergo the camera.

If she was an external unit under his control, he could just use her eyes, and never have to bother with the camera. That would at least free her up for...I don't know, a hand gun? I presume that this is a combat situation.
